Deconstruction

While working with the idea of time and clothing i developed this piece by ripping clothes into hollow structures with only the seams left visible and the rest of the fabric removed so it takes a shape of a skeletal structure.Im using different discarded clothes worn by different people so it also talks about identity, gendre, age etc.....
What i wanted to dow ith this was to make these induvidual pieces into an installation where all of these cut outs are joined and hug together like a net/running fabric in a space. It is suggestive of the body as clothes are an integral part of it and how they form deformed shapes when hung and are clustered together with each visually describing its wearer and the process through which it hangs in to its final stage for the viwer to see. So to me it acts like biographies of induviduals......

Since im interested in the body and clothing i wanted to incoporate both. I started making casts out of gypsona bandage of different figures, also portions of the torso which i wanted to later combine with fabric to form scultptural forms.Which reffered to the body but in a covering /shell sort of a way.The material i used is gypsona bandage as i like the texture that it forms on the surface after it dries and also contours can be very much evident just like wrikles and signs of aging on a body.

This piece is from works i was doing based on the aspect of time in clothing. I was interested in finding out how time as a source had an effect on the physical appearence of clothes as it is something very rarely looked upon when designing clothes as more importance is given to the idea of designing .I was interested to look at how they age and leave marks and become wrinkly which become apart of the garment in time. I was experimenting with textile, trying to acheive /freeze a moment in time so the fabric itself becomes an aspect of design and is representative to the "hidden" or not so important part of clothing.

Photography

These photographs i took after i had constructed my dresses. The idea was to photograph them in a way that i bring them down to forms being seen and read other than what they physically are and how the induvidual viewer draws their own interpretations to what my idea of death is and how i have portrayed it. The photography was done both with a model and without it , in which the images serve as complete contrasts to each other both visually and contextually as the meaning changes altogether by just the body being present in one and absent in the other. They serve as a metaphor to my perception of death yet on the other hand the viewer imbues meaning into the visual depending on their own visual perception of it but what is connected to my idea largely. for e.g. some read it as a dead animal , some specifically a goat, some hair and so on.....
The forms act as narratives ...... giving a feeling of "being staged" to evoke a feeling.(photographs without model).
* the last photograph is incomplete and in its initial stages.was left to be worked on later.

previous work ( last semester)

These pieces are works i did with the idea of using a form/a body which had an exaggerated volume .Iused them as metaphors to life and death. when placed in an empty room would suggest huge static structures of mass and volume, life size creating a sense of absense and a feelling of something being there(present) and yet being absent at the same time.It was an installation you could go around, they had a presence of their own which left one with a feeling of abandonment .Its also about feminity as they celebrate the female body.the fabrics which were lace, net, organza suggest fragility and feminity again attached to the female.
I also photographed them in a studio with andwithout amodel to capture the impact of the form , how it makes theviewer draw their own intrepretations of it in way thts suggestive of my idea of death and life.

The secound piece is the corset which ive constructed out of used and worn military boots.by ripping them and re sewing them in a way that the form the structure of a female bodice.the idea being that there are certain conotations attached to things we see around us and how we are programmed to see them in a certain way. like a millitary boot is reffered to as a sign of masculinity, power, riginess, aggression and how im deliberately wanting to change it and make it into something very feminish... which is only attached to females. im interested in how the meaning and the form changes and how it is playing with our perception.

The third piece which is a collage that ive made using a millitary camoufalge shirt by ripping it into seperate pieces where they almost loose their identity of being parts to a shirt and bringing them down to just a composition of patterns and print as general people duno how a sleeve might look like onece opened flat unless its a tailor or a seamstress.....the meaning again changes of how we read a millitary shirt ...and how it ends up just being a juxatapostion of patterns and print and form for visual pleasure...removing it from its actual pre-conceieved identity.

The last two works are about contradiction , a deliberate attempt of wanting to see certain things in a different context other than their pre-conceived ideas in our minds.
